While these can be useful, they may also leave out anything that would negatively reflect on their own products.

We do not have a direct financial interest* in any of the air cleaner companies, so you can be assured of objective information that provides you with the pros and cons of each type of air purifier.

The articles and review videos on this site focus on the main factors to consider when evaluating any air cleaner product.  Once you have a basic understanding of these factors, you can then make a more informed decision of what is most important to you.

Shopping for Air Purifiers

So what do you need to consider when shopping for air purifiers?

To begin you will need to have some personal criteria for why you need an air purifier.  Certainly clean air is important, but just what in the air is harmful and how effective will a specific air cleaner be at removing it.  This is where understanding the technology used in air purifiers becomes critical to making the best choice.  We’ll cover the various methods used to clean the air and point out the pros and cons of each.

Common air pollutants are allergens, viruses, odors and gases.  Allergens include pollutants such as pollen, mold, bacteria, animal dander, fumes and dust mites.  Also present may be tiny particles such as viruses, germs and bacteria, smoke, fumes and even smog.

Different models may be effective on some of these problems and not as effective on others. Fortunately, some manufacturers combine multiple technologies to handle these different types of air borne particles, so it is helpful to know just what kinds of pollution you hope to eliminate before choosing an air purifier.

Some other factors to consider

Cost: The initial cost of an air purifier is certainly important, but you also need to evaluate the quality and effectiveness of a unit and its long range maintenance cost, such as replacement filters or uv bulbs.  Buying a less expensive unit initially may seem more economical, but over time could end up being much more expensive.

Room Size: Also important is the size of the area you want to clean. CADR (clean air delivery rate) testing is used by some manufacturers to help you match the unit to the size of the room to be cleaned. CADR is a method developed by the independent Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers to measure the removal of dust, smoke and pollen from the air. A numbering system is used to indicate the amount of clean air delivered to a room per minute.  For example a CADR of 50 will be effective for a room of 80 square feet, CADR of 80 for 120 square feet, and so on.

Filter Monitor: While not an essential feature, some units have monitors that provide visual or audio cues that let you know when it’s time to change filters. Because filters can become clogged with particles, thus reducing their efficiency, it is important that you maintain proper maintenance, so monitors can be extremely helpful.

Noise Levels: Models that use fans to pull the air through the unit generally work better in tests, but fans can also produce noise. Some models provide different fan speeds so you can choose an acceptable noise level.  In some areas this may not be very important to you, but in a bedroom it could be critical.  Since many models rate their unit’s effective cleaning area based on running the fan at its highest speed, when using a lower speed to reduce the noise level you may also be reducing the amount of clean air it can effectively deliver to the room.

As we said before, choosing the right air purifier system can seem like a challenge at first.  But armed with a little of the right information, you can quickly become an informed consumer and find the best solution without spending a fortune.  Take a few moments and go through some of the other articles on this site and you’ll soon be able to narrow down your choices and find the best solution for cleaner air in your home or office.
